Dorothy had determined to write a book about her favorite saint, Therese of Lisieux, bringing out the social dimensions of her spirituality, her teaching of the “Little Way.”

JULY 6, 1953

It is 4:30 in the morning and I have been awake since 3,—one of those sleepless times. So I decided to get up and work. Every time I sit down to write that book on the Little Flower I am blocked. I just can’t seem to get anywhere with it. It is like working on that biography of Peter.‖ I just am not a biographer. What I write is dull, undistinguished, and I am faced with the humiliating fact that I can write only about myself, a damning fact. Of course, it is in relation to the work, about the work, about people, etc. So I wonder if I should not just write as I have been, the story of the poor. Fr. [Harvey] Egan, a dear friend, assures me I should give up trying to write about Therese, but write about the laity, our work, our ideas.

Isn’t it funny. Some days the ideas pour out, and other times one cannot write at all.
